Power Steering Pump Seal Kit Install for You

Power Steering Pump Kit Install and its Causes of Leaks

Power steering pump leaks are a common thing, especially on vehicles getting up there in age. A power steering pump seal kit install could be a great alternative to a new pump if you have a leak. The more a car is used and the older it is, the more likely the seals inside the pump have started to deform, crack or even crumble. The power steering system on your car is just as import as the oil system, losing enough power steering fluid will depressurize it and start to cause handling problems, which can put a driver in a dangerous situation.

New Pump Vs. Seal Kit

There are a few important factors when it comes to deciding if a power steering pump seal kit installation is the right course of action. If your power steering pump has more damage than just the seals, then the answer is usually pretty simple, buy a new or used pump. But if the pump is still in good shape then it makes a good candidate for replacing the seals. It is a lot cheaper to change the seals on the pump, but make sure you have the skills to do it. It’s not a difficult job for a professional but it can be very difficult for a beginner.

Recognizing A Leaky Pump

The two most common telltale signs that you might need to do a power steering pump seal kit installation, are that leakage can be found in front of where the pully wheel spins, and on the power steering fluid reservoir around the filler cap.

1. Usually, the seal that fails first is the pulley shaft seal, and when it does it will often leak fluid on to the pulley and throw the fluid around the area where the pulley spins. If you see a mess in that location you know it means it’s time to change the seals on your pump.

2. If you have a leaking seal, the power steering pump will also pull air into the system and the air will bubble out through the cap on top of the fluid reservoir. You’ll notice fluid or moisture collecting around the cap. If you see that it means you probably have a leak.

Installation

A power steering pump seal kit install can be quite easy to do, and there are loads of videos around which show you how to do the job right. But there are some things you’ll want to look out for.

– Loosen the power steering pulley bolts before you take the belt off of the pump, it should provide enough friction on the pully to crack the bolts from their threads without having to resort to screwdrivers and prybars to stop the pulley from spinning.

– Look out for any other parts which need to be removed that might be in the way, do this before taking out the power steering pump.

– When removing the power steering lines, be careful when removing the fittings and especially when putting them back in, They’re very easy to cross thread, and if that happens you’ll need to replace them or the entire line. Also, make sure to check that there’s a gasket on the end of the fitting when reinstalling the lines. If you forget that your engine bay will get a power steering fluid shower, not something you want.

– The last step, don’t forget to properly bleed the system!

A power steering pump seal kit installation doesn’t have to be a pain, take your time and follow the proper steps and you should be able to get the job done in just a few short hours.
